Dawson College Claims Poker Promotion was Mistake
Back to school usually means new classes, teachers and buying school supplies. For students attending Dawson College in Montreal, back to school means “let’s go play poker!” The school recently passed out a planner that contains information about the school and also advertisements.
One such advertisement was for a local poker room called Plaza 138 Poker. The advertisement has caused a ruckus on campus as Plaza 138 Poker gives out free alcohol plus food along with allowing their customers to smoke inside the poker room. This is not the norm when it comes to school advertising.
Plaza 138 Poker has stated that they were told the ad was not a problem. Dawson College says the ad was a mistake and should never have made it on the planner. The Dawson Student Union, who is in charge of the planner, says they hired an outside company to handle all advertising for the planner. The administration of the school has stated that they were not aware of the poker ad until the planner was released.
One thousand seven hundred student who attend the college are underage and have most likely already seen the add The Student Union are saying that they are taking steps to remedy the problem and take precautions so that this doesn’t happen again. Although the majority of the damage has been done since the planner has already been released.
The company has already paid for the advertising and it should be allowed on the planner. If the ad is taken away then the right thing to do would be to reimburse Plaza 138 Poker their money. A lot of planning and time is taken when preparing such materials and someone had to have known what they were printing, they just may not have had a problem with it.
