This was an eight-week study that included twenty-seven volunteers and a University associated professor Jon Grant M.D., who lead the study and is also a professor of psychiatry at the University of Minnesota.

The study subjects were given increased doses over the course of this study of N-acetyl cysteine, which is an amino acid, and according to this study provided evidence that it was able to decrease the urge to gamble. At the end of this study approximately sixty percent of the people who under went this study had a diminished yearning to gamble.

This study did not end after the eight week trail, the participants were requested to take part in a second study which was a blind study, sixteen of the original participants stayed for the next trial where the people that received the placebo went back to gambling and the ones that continued to receive the amino acid stated they had less of an urge to gamble.

The findings of this study will be published in Biological Psychiatry this Saturday, September 15th, Dr. Grant says he feels this is promising of the amino acid and its affect on gambling urges.
