New Delhi Man Loses Daughter in Card Game

Sep 23, 2009
Author: Sadonna Price

A New Delhi man, Ismail Sheikh, put up his eighteen year old daughter as a wager in a recent card game when he ran out of money to wager. Sheikh did not earn a win with the hand and therefore he lost his daughter to the man he was playing against.

As horrible as this sounds, it only gets worse. The young girl was dragged out of her village by the winner of the game and her father just watched her go. The village found out about the daughter being taken and they came together to rescue her.

The girl was later found and was very much traumatized by the event. She has now secluded herself to her home. Sources say the Sheikh is a compulsive gambler and has a drinking problem. It has become such a problem and with the recent events, Sheikh has now been removed from his home by family members.

Gambling is illegal in the area but games can be found underground in what are called ‘dens’. Villagers can visit the ‘dens’ and hopefully earn money to help their families. Police are looking into the incident and hopefully the girl will remain safe from her father.
