New Zealand Casino Hopes to Bring in 1M Tournment
Poker is growing all over the world and even if you don't play all you have to do is turn on your tv to see the evidence. We can now watch popular tournaments on tv as well as shows on poker strategy and other poker related shows. Right now in the United States poker is the third most watched sport on television, coming in after football and car racing.
Other countries around the world are catching on that poker is here to stay and not a fad and they are looking to cash in. There has been a huge jump in the amount of participants in Australia since Joe Hacem who is from Australia won the Main Event at the World Series of Poker.
New Zealand is keeping an eye out as their country begins to catch up in the poker industry. One casino in particular wants to bring big name players into New Zealand and more specifically into their casino, SkyCity. The controlling company of the casino is looking to bring a million dollar tournament to the country.
"I think SkyCity has the fundamentals in place to host such a tournament. But we will have to offer at least a million," said Ejaad Dean, SkyCity's new table game boss. He has been in the business for over twenty years, and believes the casino can attract the big names.
"If we can't attract sponsorship we can't attract the players," said Ryan. He was referring to country laws that state that New Zealanders are banned from promoting gambling. In essence, that means the casino would not be allowed to advertise the poker sites that would possibly sponsor the event."
