“Poker Brat” Phil Hellmuth teamed up with actor Steve Martin and author Amy Tan to raise more than $900,000 for The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The money was raised through the “All In” for Kids Poker Tournament, which was ultimately won by John Foley of Boston, Massachusetts.
The tournament was held in the Mandarin Oriental hotel in New York City on October 21st. The tournament was sponsored by Jami and Joel Friedman, and brought together over 40 sponsors to contribute to the hospital program.
The poker tournament reportedly drew 120 players, mixing athletes, celebrities and poker players with those in the medical field. The action was fast and furious, but ultimately, the poker action took a backseat to the cause itself. The money raised will benefit thousands of children each year from around the United States who seek treatment at The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment.
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was founded in 1855, when it became the first hospital in the United States devoted exclusively to caring for children. In the last 155 years, it has developed many innovations in pediatric medicine and healthcare.
Phil Hellmuth is one of the most successful and infamous tournament poker players of all time, having won 11 World Series of Poker bracelets, including the 1989 WSOP Main Event. Hellmuth has won over $11 million in live tournament play during his career.
