Self monitored gambling on the horizon?

The launch of an effective new responsible gaming tool at the Swedish government gambling website Svenske Spel went for the most part unnoticed early in July but is progressively more eye catching for Swedish players.

"Spelkoll" approximately translates into 'player or gambling control' is a resourceful technological advance particularly designed to identify gambling patterns that may imply a gambling problem surfacing in an individual. Svenske Spel has made Spelkoll available as a voluntary aid players can use to monitor their playing activity and let them know of any indication of a developing problem.

The software checks over a hundred different parameters, such as rate of recurrence in play, habits, wagering levels and all indications of loss chasing. Users are divided into three different levels: green, orange and red. Each of the three levels have a corresponding response that will occur as someone moves through the ranks. The mid-range category of players, or orange players, are excluded from promos and advertising. Those players who reach the red level will likely be invited to withdraw themselves from the site.

Developed in partnership with ICU, the software utilizes cutting edge data mining technology. The tool is a first in the industry and is proficient at exposing, at an early stage, gamblers with a propensity to become a problem. The ICU intelligence data mining technology is established on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and more specifically Genetic Programming (GP), which is new in the e-gaming industry. The strength of ICU's technology is its aptitude to discover minimal, virtually indiscernible, patterns in customer behavior in substantial databases without interference.

The results in each instance are founded on facts and real data, not human assumption and bias. The user, or in this case the gambling customer, has the power to make use of all available data, not simply a small part of it, and the software has the ability to adapt from any given experience, optimizing itself and become accustomed to changes in the user's behavior. "Spelkoll is a new and innovative tool that shows one of many different solutions our technology can provide," says Andreas Holmström, CEO ICU intelligence. "The complexity in developing Spelkoll has been a challenge for all involved parties and the outcome has been more than satisfying."

Jespers Kärrbrink, CEO Svenska Spel says, "By combining behavioural science and psychology with mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and IT we have developed a tool that will sustain the thrill and excitement of gambling and help players to avoid transforming that into an addiction or an unhealthy gambling pattern".
As this tool is making the mark on the Swedish gambling world, will it become available worldwide? How will the rest of the gambling world receive it?
