A Bad Beat For UK's Proposed Super Casino?

Jul 19, 2007
Author:

Before his departure from public office, former Prime Minister Tony Blair proposed a plan to develop a 'Las Vegas style' Super Casino. Several major locations vied for the establishment, with Manchester becoming the anticipated destination. However, the new Prime Minister Gordon Brown may be putting a stop to the Super Casino project.

Brown announced his disapproval of the proposal, which struck debate among the Tories and Liberal Democrats. On the one hand, it would create jobs and revenue for the community. On the other hand, it may increase problematic gambling and criminal activities.

The real debate lies within what some believe to be the hypocrisy of Prime Minister Brown himself. Conservative MP Jeremy Hunt stated, "This raises menacing questions about Brown's credibility. We believe and understand the concerns raised with gambling, however, he voted for every stage of the Gambling Act."

The Conservative Party bases their ideas on both moral character and free market enterprise with less government interference. It would seem the issue of a super casino in Britain has split the party's guidelines.
