Online gambling may be about to see a transaction that will dwarf any poker pot or progressive jackpot that has even been won in an Internet casino. Media Corp. is looking to sell the www.gambling.com domain name, and has set a reserve price of $9 million.
According to reports, Media Corp. – a UK online casino and advertising company – hopes to make over $10 million from the sale, which should attract interest from many large online gambling companies. Media reports have suggested that Playtech and Bet365 may both be interested in purchasing the domain. Private-equity firms also seem to be likely to show interest.
The site will be sold by Sedo Holding AG, a German firm which specializes in selling Internet domains.
Currently, gambling.com exists as a portal site that refers players to other gambling sites, as well as providing gambling news. It is unclear what a potential buyer might choose to do with the site in the future.
Originally, Media Corp. purchased the domain in May 2005 for the staggering price of $20 million. However, the value of the domain has dropped due in large part to the regulations on Internet gambling in the United States which were passed in 2006.
