Betfair Struggles With Getting License

With all the current disputes and battles going on over online gambling, why not add another struggle for these businesses? Betfair is trying to obtain an operating license but nothing yet has gone through for them. Currently, the New South Wales Government is in discussions with Betfair about the license and whether or not it should be given to them.

 

Hoping that they jump on the bandwagon and give the okay to Betfair, Gaming and Racing Minister Graham West has been expressing that about one quarter of the players who use Betfair's site are from NSW so therefore, the state may be missing out on some of this.

 

"Betfair Poker is an internet product so because it is already licensed in an Australian jurisdiction, it is easy for people to jump online and use it," stated West.

 

"It is not a question of creating a new method, it is a question of how we get the best revenue out of that for NSW and especially the racing industry."

 

But George Souris, Opposition gaming and racing spokesperson, is concerned that it is already banned in 47 out of the 50 leading thoroughbred racing countries throughout the world.

 

According to Souris, "Betting exchanges are a very dangerous and potentially corruptible organization and way of doing business." Souris, along with others, is worried that punters would bet on losing horses and Betfair would allow this.

 

"We have the most transparent operating system of any waging operator anywhere in the world," stated Betfair spokesperson Andrew Twaits who insists that Betfair maintains integrity.
