The Battle Goes On Over Online Gambling
While these two battle out online gambling, there have been many other companies and countries that are interested to see the outcome of this case. When online casinos lost American gamblers they lost big profits and though they have found other markets since the United States placed laws into affect that keep Americans from participating in online gambling they would like to have the Americans back.
This case before the World Trade Organization has a lot riding on it for the United States who quickly and quietly passed the UIGEA law that stops Americans from using their financial institutions for gambling, this includes casinos that are outside of the United States.
Antigua has won their case so far and other countries are watching closely, some of these countries are the Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, the European Union, India, Japan and Macao. These countries could also place claims against the United States, however they would just as soon prefer to have their American players back at their casinos.
The United States has different ideas of how they might settle this claim against them and that is to not only pay the money Antigua is awarded but the also are of the mind to back out of the World Trade Organization as they feel their trade agreements should not include Internet gambling. If the United States does take this stand the other countries that can make claim against the U.S. might also have to be negotiated with and paid.
