Antonio Esfandiari Holds Chip Lead at Five Diamond World Poker Classic

Antonio Esfandiari found himself in the chip lead as he entered the third day of play at the World Poker Tour’s Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Esfandiari entered Day Four with 1,082,500 chips, nearly 400,000 more than his closest competitor.

Several other notable players were also among the chip leaders. Vanessa Rousso began the day third in chips with 694,000 chips, while Freddy Deeb was close behind in 4th, with 654,000. Also doing well was Doyle Brunson, who is in 13th place with 446,000.

Day Three saw the money bubble break, as the top 100 players were all guaranteed prize money. However, the day began with 138 players, meaning that several were forced to go home just short of the money, with Ali Eslami proving to be the bubble boy by finishing 101st. Many notables cashed before being eliminated on the third day, including Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Hoyt Corkins, David Chiu, Chau Giang and Dwyte Pilgrim. All players who cashed made at least $12,000.

As Day Four play continued, several of the big names remained in play as the field was reduced to just two tables – and incredibly, Esfandiari maintained his chip lead. Currently, Esfandiari holds over 2.8 million in chips, just ahead of Andrew Robl, who has the biggest stack at the other table with 2.6 million. Vanessa Rousso, Doyle Brunson, Amit Makhija and World Series of Poker runner-up John Racener are also still alive.

The tournament will come to a close on December 8th, when the televised final table is played out. The winner of the tournament will ultimately win $870,000, as well as a seat in the $25,000 buy-in WPT World Championship in 2011.
