Matt Waxman battled past a field of 352 players to win the World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City. The feat marks the first major live tournament victory for the 25-year-old Floridian, and earned him a prize of $117,797.
Along with his prize money, Waxman also won a seat into the WSOPC National Championship, which will be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas next May, as well as a WSOPC championship ring.
Waxman entered the final table in second position, and remained one of the favorites throughout the course of play. When the tournament came down to heads up play, Waxman found himself with the chip lead against Jesus Cabrera. Though Cabrera doubled up several times to stay alive, Waxman continued to hold the chip lead up through the final hand.
On that last hand, Cabrera once again looked to be in control, as he got all-in before the flop with pocket sixes against the pocket threes of Waxman. However, this time Cabrera’s luck had run out; a three on the flop put Waxman well ahead, and he held on until the river to claim his victory.
The win marked Cabrera’s second largest cash of his career; a final table finish at a $5,000 buy-in event at the 2009 WSOP earned him slightly more than his WSOPC victory, thanks in large part to the relatively low $1,650 buy-in. According to the Hendon Mob, Waxman’s career winnings at live tournaments now exceed $550,000.
The WSOP Circuit will remain in Atlantic City for the $10,000 buy-in Northeast Regional Championship, which begins on Sunday. Here are the final table winnings from the WSOPC Main Event:
