Sam Trickett overcame a final table filled with strong players in order to win the main event of the Patrouche Poker Tour. For winning, Trickett won one of the largest prizes in all of European poker, taking home a total of €1 million.
The Patrouche Poker Tour is one of the most prestigious events in European poker circles, and the event took steps to make sure the final table would receive extra attention. Not only was there over €3 million in prize money up for grabs among the final nine players, but there was plenty of time for players to think about how they would compete against their opponents.
That’s because the PPT took a page out of the World Series of Poker’s playbook in designing their final table. Like the Main Event of the WSOP, the initial stages of the PPT Main Event were played much earlier – in this case, in September, when 579 players competed until they were down to just nine players. Those nine then had to wait until this week to play it out for the title and the prize money.
Trickett came into the final table as the chip leader, but it wasn’t a smooth ride to the title for the English pro. Early on, Trickett fell far down the chip standings after losing a pot to an all-in Ilan Boujenah. However, he managed to make the final four in second place, then worked hard on the final day to get past Boujenah, WSOP bracelet winner Oleksii Kovalchuk, and American pro Salman Behbehani heads-up to win the championship.
For Trickett, the win continued a great 2011, in which he has won nearly $4.6 million in live tournament play. His overall lifetime winnings are more than $6.3 million, making him the all-time leading in live tournament winnings for all players in the United Kingdom and Ireland, according to the Hendon Mob Database.
