Ever since 2006, the National Deaf Poker Tour has allowed deaf players to come together and compete in tournaments designed specifically for the deaf. While several players who have participated in NDPT events have gone on to successfully cash in major mainstream poker events, it is believed that no deaf player has yet won a major poker tournament.
In addition to the poker action, players will also be invited to attend one of several screenings of the film The Hammer, which chronicles the true story of Matt Hamill, a deaf UFC fighter and former NCAA wrestling champion.
The NDPT holds a handful of events a year, with tournaments both in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. The annual Summer National Deaf Poker Championships were last held this July at The Venetian, with five no-limit hold’em events scheduled over three days. The tour has at least three events scheduled for next year – spring and fall events in Atlantic City, along with a Summer event in Las Vegas to coincide with the DeafNation World Expo.
