Anton Makiievskyi looked to continue the great success of Ukrainian players at this year’s World Series of Poker with his run to the November Nine. Unfortunately, in the end, he came up short, being eliminated in 8th place in the Main Event.
The fatal hand occurred with Makiievskyi in the small blind and the blinds still at 400k/800k, with a 100k ante. The action was folded around to the young Ukrainian pro, who moved all-in for just 10.5 million. Pius Heinz was in the big blind, and quickly called.
Makiievskyi showed KQ offsuit, while Heinz had a slight lead with pocket nines. However, the Ukrainian looked to be in excellent shape after the flop, which came KJJ and gave him two pair.
But Heinz has been running good all tournament, and it didn’t stop now, as the turn was a nine, giving Heinz a full house and the lead. Makiievskyi wasn’t quite done, as a king or a jack on the river would give him a better full house. However, the river was a seven, ending his tournament journey in 8th place.
Makiievskyi will take home $1,010,015 for his finish. He was the youngest player at the final table at just 21 years of age. In fact, had he won the tournament, he would have broken the record for the youngest player ever to win the WSOP Main Event, beating Joe Cada’s record by about three months.
Makiievskyi’s young age hadn’t given him much time to rack up live tournament success, though he had already cashed in several events in his home country of Ukraine. He also had another cash in this year’s WSOP Europe, finishing 19th in the No-Limit Hold’em Shootout event.
We will continue to have more coverage of the WSOP Final Table as players are eliminated. Today’s action will continue until three players are remaining; the final three will come back to battle for the bracelet and a World Championship on Tuesday evening.
