The last true amateur at the World Series of Poker Main Event has been eliminated. Badih “Bob” Bounahra was knocked out of the tournament in 7th place, leaving a table of six professional poker players to battle for the biggest prize in poker.
Bounahra was already down to an extremely short stack before his final hand took place. With the blinds at 400k/800k and a 100k ante, Martin Staszko raised to 1.7 million. When the action got around to Bounahra, he moved all in for a total of just under 4.5 million.
Staszko showed A9 offsuit, which was dominating the A5 offsuit of Bounahra. The 762 flop didn’t do much to help either player, and a king on the turn left Bounahra with just three outs. Sadly for Bounahra, the river was a six, meaning that Staszko had the better ace-high.
For Bounahra, the 7th place finish left him with $1,314,097 in prize money, and the knowledge that he was the last non-professional to survive in the most prestigious poker tournament in the world. Bounahra, who hailed from Belize, was the first player from that country to reach the WSOP final table. He had some smaller successes in various poker tournaments, but nothing that came close to his incredible run at the WSOP Main Event this year.
After that hand, Pius Heinz remained in the chip lead with a stack of 52.5 million, closely followed by Matt Giannetti and Martin Staszko. The short stack was Eoghan’O’Dea, at just 11.625 million.
We will continue to have more coverage of the WSOP Final Table as players are eliminated. Today’s action will continue until three players are remaining; the final three will come back to battle for the bracelet and a World Championship on Tuesday evening.
