Eoghan O'Dea Eliminated in 6th Place at WSOP Final Table

Ireland’s last hope in the World Series of Poker Main Event was eliminated in 6th place, as Eoghan O’Dea was knocked out just after suffering a brutal beat that crippled the Irish pro’s stack.

O’Dea looked to be in excellent shape just a few hands before being his fateful hand. He had gotten most of his chips into a huge pot against the all-in Ben Lamb, with O’Dea holding a significant advantage: A9 vs. Lamb’s Q8 of diamonds.

However, the flop came JJ6 with two diamonds, giving Lamb a ton of outs, and actually making him a slight favorite in the hand. A four of clubs on the turn shifted the balance of power far back into O’Dea’s favor, however, and it seemed as though Lamb’s amazing year at the WSOP would come to an end. But an eight on the river gave Lamb a pair, more than doubling him up and leaving O’Dea with just 2.6 million.

Just two hands later, O’Dea moved all-in for his last 2.3 million, and after a three-bet from Martin Staszko isolated O’Dea, leaving the two heads up. Staszko had a huge edge with pocket eights against the Q6 of O’Dea, and the while the board gave O’Dea a straight draw on the turn, a blank on the river eliminated him from the competition.

O’Dea will take home $1,720,831 for his 6th place finish. O’Dea had one of the most interesting stories at the World Series; he was the son of a former WSOP Main Event final table member, Donnacha O’Dea, who also finished in 6th place in 1983 – as well as having a 9th place finish in 1991. Donnacha O’Dea won a Pot Limit Omaha bracelet in 1998.

The younger O’Dea has had a very successful poker career thus far, including final table appearances on the World Poker Tour and at this year’s WSOP Europe. His career winnings now total over $2.5 million.

We will continue to have more coverage of the WSOP Final Table as players are eliminated. Today’s action will continue until three players are remaining; the final three will come back to battle for the bracelet and a World Championship on Tuesday evening.
