Matt Giannetti suffered a tough beat, and then saw his tournament come to a screeching halt as play ended on the penultimate day of the World Series of Poker’s Main Event. Giannetti was eliminated in 4th place, setting up an exciting three way race for the gold bracelet that will play out on Tuesday night.
Just four hands earlier, Giannetti appeared set to make the final day of play, as he had then short-stacked Ben Lamb on the ropes. After Giannetti raised to 2.6 million, Lamb moved all-in for 26.8 million, after which Giannetti snap-called. Lamb had a solid holding with A7 of hearts, but Giannetti was well ahead with pocket jacks.
The K95 flop with two hearts made things more interesting, giving Lamb a flush draw. When the four of hearts hit on the turn, Lamb had the nut flush and didn’t even have to sweat the river, having doubled up through the only other American player remaining in the tournament.
Now it was Giannetti with the short stack. After doubling up on the next hand to get to 14.4 million, Giannetti again moved in two hands later. However, this time it was Lamb who had a hand worth snap-calling with, and he quickly flipped over his pocket kings, which were well ahead of Giannetti’s A3 offsuit.
After Lamb made an off-hand comment about sweating Giannetti’s ace, the flop revealed there was no need to worry: KKQ gave Lamb flopped quads, ending Giannetti’s run without any need to see the turn or the river (a five and a queen, respectively).
Giannetti’s great run through the Main Event ended in 4th place. He takes home $3,012,700 for his result.
The final three players will return to the Rio on Tuesday night to finish the tournament and crown the 2011 World Series of Poker World Champion. Pius Heinz will come into the final session with an overwhelming chip lead; he currently has 107.8 million in his stack, giving him more than half the chips in play. Lamb is currently second with 55.4 million. Bringing up the rear – but hardly on a short stack – is Martin Staszko, the chip leader coming into the final table who now has 42.7 million.
