Drew Carey Defends Poker
Drew Carey has recently released a video blog online with the title "Texas Close'em". In the piece he interviews people who were involved in a charity poker game and it was raided by police. The game proceeds were to go to the VFW hall and other organizations but were taken into custody by police and the building was forced to close due to lack of funds.
In the video, Carey criticizes the United States Government for its paramilitary-style raid on VFW Post 1837 in Dallas this past April. "Poker is about as American as baseball and apple pie,' said Carey. It was born here in America. Mark Twain loved it. He's a great American. Until recently, Supreme Court justices had a monthly game. They're great Americans. You'd think playing poker in the VFW hall would be about as American as anything you can do." He also stated the UIGEA is "misguided" and that the online legislation along with the raid, were part of a broader plan to shut down poker even in low-stakes games benefiting charity.
Carey began his career as a stand-up comedian and then went on to his show The Drew Carey Show and to host the show Whose Line is it Any way? He most recently took the place of Bob Barker as the host of The Price is Right.
