2007 WPT Controversy with J.P. Tran

The opening day of the 2007 World Poker Finals (WPF) proved to be unnerving for J.C. Tran, player of the year for Season 5 of the World Poker Tour. Being involved in a very controversial hand, had everyone at the Foxwoods Resort Casino talking about the J.C. Tran controversy.

Covered by PokerListings reporters, the hand is described as follows:

"On a flop of 9-9-5 rainbow, J.C. Tran and an opponent who insisted he remain nameless get all-in with Player 2 holding the shorter stack. Tran turns up J-9 for trips and P2 insta-mucks, but the dealer retrieves the cards from the muck and turns them face-up, exposing A7o."

"The board finishes 8-6 to give Player 2 the runner-runner straight and Tran goes nuts and rightfully so, claiming that his opponent mucked his hand and the pot should be his."

"The floor is called and decides to rule in favor of Player 2, who rakes the pot while Tran demands to see the video tape, to no avail."

Tran might have lost the pot, but not without being able to cover his opponent and still being in contention with about $25,000 in chips.
