Athletics Hall of Fame adds Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson is usually recognized as one of the most famous poker players in the world but last week Texas Dolly was recognized for his achievements in athletics. The Athletics Hall of Fame inducted Brunson for his achievements at Hardin Simmons University.
In his younger days Brunson was an accomplished track and basketball player at the University. Brunson was a key part of the HSU basketball team when they won the conference championship to earn a spot in eh NCAA Division 1 playoffs.
Brunson scored 412 points and was the only athlete from HSU in any sport to be named the MVP of the Division 1 Border Conference. Brunson was passed over at first for induction of the Athletics Hall of Fame because of his role in the poker world. But officials came around and recognized Brunson’s achievements.
In a blog post before the induction Brunson commented: “After being turned down for 40 years I have mixed feelings, but all my old teammates will be there, so I’m going down and will be on my best behavior.”
