2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel was the victim of a home invasion Wednesday, one in which his WSOP bracelet was stolen.
According to Duhamel, two men broke into his house in order to commit a robbery. During the robbery, Duhamel was “physically assaulted and robbed,” as well as “threatened with death” according to the account on his website.
Duhamel does not appear to have suffered any major injuries during the home invasion. The robbers also stole a watch given to Duhamel by PokerStars to commemorate his victory.
“These two items have a value much larger than money to me,” Duhamel said. “I hope with all my heart that we will be able to recover them in the near future.”
Duhamel, who lives in Montreal, met with police on Thursday to discuss the attack. According to a police spokesman, the possibility that Duhamel was specifically targeted due to his fame and wealth hasn’t yet been ruled out. In addition to the items that were stolen, the robbers also took a significant amount of cash – some in euros, and some in Canadian dollars.
Duhamel won over $8.9 million for his victory in the Main Event last year. In the process, Duhamel became the first ever Canadian player to win the WSOP Main Event title. While Duhamel has keep a reasonably low profile since his victory, he does have over $550,000 in winnings in 2011, giving him lifetime earnings of over $9.6 million. He is the second-winningest tournament poker player in Canadian history, behind only Daniel Negreanu.
