Miramax Announces Plans for Rounders Sequel

Have you spent the last 12 years wondering what Mike McDermott and Worm have been up to? If so, you may be happy to know that the cult classic film Rounders has been pegged by Miramax to receive a sequel.

There is no news as of yet as to what the cast would look like for a Rounders sequel, let alone what the plot would be. However, Miramax seems to be committed to the project, based on a statement made by the studio this week. The statement said, in part:

“Miramax and The Weinstein Company (TWC) today announced an agreement to create sequels to some of Miramax’s best-known properties and to partner on potential new television shows and special edition home entertainment products. The first films to be produced under the agreement will be sequels to Bad Santa, Rounders and Shakespeare in Love.”

However, as production has not yet begun, it’s still unclear when the film would be slated to hit theaters. In fact, this early in the process, there’s still always the possibility that the film never gets made at all. Still, poker players should be happy to see that one of the best poker films ever made may be getting a update that reflects the current state of the poker world – one that’s vastly different than the world portrayed in the 1998 original.

The original film followed the exploits of Mike McDermott, a law student who returns to poker after quitting the game to help his friend settle his debts. The movie features a relatively realistic portrayal of Texas Hold’em, a game that was less of a household name in 1998 than it has become in the past decade. The film generally received positive reviews, and starred Matt Damon, Edward Norton and John Malkovich.
