The tradition of the tournament began 21 years ago as 36 men and women gathered in a small room above the office of bookmaker Liam Flood. A rival bookmaker of Flood, Terry Rodgers who also played in the tournament, came up with the name The Irish Open. The idea came during a trip to Las Vegas while he watched the World Series of Poker.
