It’s been a good summer for the Spanish. Following on the heals of wins by Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, and the Spanish football team at the World Cup, Spanish poker player Marc Colome took first place at the Estrellas Poker Tour event in Madrid, Spain. Colome defeated Romanian player Adrian Veghinas heads up to claim the title.
For outlasting a field of 291 players, Colome took home a first place prize of €67,519, while Veghinas settled for €44,500. Colome, who hails from Barcelona, also won a free entry into the upcoming European Poker Tour event in his home city.
Though Colome started the final table third in chips, he managed to reach heads-up play with a slight chip lead over Veghinas. In the final hand, all the money went in before the flop; Colome showed AK, while Veghinas held pocket fours. Colome caught the ace he needed on the flop, and then added an unnecessary king on the river to clinch the title. Both of the finalists were relatively unknown heading into the event, though Veghinas had cashed in several tournaments in Vienna and in smaller European Poker Tour events.
The Estrellas Poker Tour is a series of tournaments taking place in cities across Spain, such as Malaga, Alicante and Madrid. The series culminates in the Barcelona European Poker Tour event. The Estrellas Poker Tour is heavily sponsored and promoted by PokerStars, which also promotes other regional poker tours around the world.
