Jake Cody won his second major title of the year, taking down the 2010 World Poker Tour London Poker Classic. Cody, 22, earlier won the European Poker Tour event in Deauville this January. For first place, Cody took home £273,783 (approximately $420,000).
Cody, a native of the UK, dominated the final table to secure his crown. After knocking out Kristoffer Thorsson in 4th, and Bruce Atkinson in 3rd, he went into heads up play against Nichlas Mattsson with approximately a 5-2 chip advantage.
In the final hand, all the money moved in preflop, as Cody held QQ against Mattsson’s AQ of diamonds. Cody’s queens held up, eliminating Mattsson. For second place, Mattsson took home £176,979 (about $272,000).
Cody is relatively new to the live poker scene, but he has already made a great impression. His win on the EPT earlier this year earned him nearly $1.2 million, and a smattering of small cashes followed before his big WPT win this week. Cody has made over $1.6 million in 2010; according to the Hendon Mob Database, this puts him 23rd on the 2010 money list for live tournaments.
The World Poker Tour is in the middle of their 9th season of operation, and features some of the world’s largest poker tournaments. The season will conclude with the WPT World Championship at the Bellagio in Las Vegas next May.
