Jason Mercier rose above a stacked field to claim the first ever PokerStars Champion of Champions tournament title. The tournament featured every winner in the history of the European Poker Tour, and took place at the Gran Casino in Madrid.
In total, 50 EPT winners took part in the event, a freeroll which offered a €100,000 prize fund. Prizes were awarded in EPT buy-ins for the upcoming tournament season.
Mercier took down the title by surviving a late-night heads up battle with Galen Hall. For first place, Mercier received €50,000 in buy-ins for the European Poker Tour’s 8th season. Hall took €25,000 in entries for second place. Four players in total made the money, with Max Lykov taking €15,000 in buy-ins for 3rd place, and Vicky Coren winning €10,000 worth of EPT entries.
“I’m extremely happy,” Mercier told CardPlayer. “It was a tough tournament. Really good players came out and, when we got deep, I did think at one point that I was going to bubble it.”
The European Poker Tour, which is sponsored by PokerStars, has now wrapped up its 7th season of action. The most recent season featured 13 event spread out over 12 different nations.
Mercier, a Florida native, has won nearly $6 million in prizes over the course of his tournament poker career. Along with being one of the top money winners in each year since 2008, Mercier has won a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2009, and won back-to-back “High Roller” titles at the Mohegan Sun stop on the North American Poker Tour in 2010 and 2011.
