Manny Pacquiao has made a big impact in the world of boxing, as well as in the political realm in his homeland of the Philippines. Now, Pacquiao is set to become an influential figure in the world of poker as well.
In a deal made just last week, Pacquiao has lent his name to a tournament on the Asian Poker Tour. The tournament, called the Manny Pacquiao World Poker Event, will take place from December 7-12 in the Philippines.
“The APT is obviously proud to be ensuring its popular and trusted protocol is followed at the Manny Pacquiao World Poker Event,” said APT Tournament Director Lloyd Fontillas. “I’m sure it will be a pleasure working with such a respected personality as Manny and we’re looking forward to seeing a large turnout come December 7.”
Pacquiao is no stranger to the world of poker. He has been known as a big fan of poker, and has sometimes been seen playing in high-stakes games. According to a report at OnlinePoker.net, Pacquiao has been seen playing in games as high at $100/$200 no-limit hold’em at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles.
But Pacquiao earned his fame primarily through boxing, where he has been perhaps the most successful boxer of the new century. With a record of 53 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws (with 38 wins by knockout), Pacquiao earned the title of Fighter of the Decade from the Boxing Writers Association of America. He has won world championship titles in eight different weight classes, ranging from Flyweight to Light Middleweight. More recently, he has served as a member of the Philippine House of Representatives, winning his seat in the 2010 elections.
Several tournaments are scheduled for the Manny Pacquiao World Poker Event, including a PHP 500,000 (approximately $11,600) High Roller tournament, and a PHP 50,000 (about $1,150) Main Event. The Asian Poker Tour was founded in 2008, and organizes events in several Asian nations.
