Matt Waxman outlasted a field of 312 players to become the first American ever to win a World Poker Tour event in Paris. Waxman won the WPT Grand Prix de Paris, winning a prize of €518,750, which includes a $25,000 entry into the season ending WPT Championship event.
Waxman won after a final table that lasted just over 100 hands. In the end, Waxman found himself heads up against Hugo Lemaire. After gaining the chip lead, Waxman moved all in on the flop with flush draw, and was called by Lemaire, who held top pair. Waxman completed his draw on the river, making his flush and ending the tournament.
For his second place finish, Lemaire won €311,100 and a free entry into WPT Amneville.
Waxman’s victory was just the latest triumph in what has been a very successful year for the American pro. Already this year, Waxman had cashed three times at the World Series of Poker, including a 3rd place finish in a $1,500 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event. With the addition of his win in Paris, his winnings for the year will have eclipsed $1 million in total.
Waxman had to fight through a final table filled with talented players in order to win his first WPT title. Other players who reached the final table included Fred Magen, Byron Kaverman, Mikko Sundell and Martin Jacobson. The winners at the televised final table were as follows:
1st: Matt Waxman: €518,750
2nd: Hugo Lemaire: €311,100
3rd: Fred Magen: €211,100
4th: Byron Kaverman: €155,550
5th: Mikko Sundell €133,330
6th: Martin Jacobson: €88,900
The next stop on the World Poker Tour is Atlantic City, as the tournament series will head there for the Borgata Poker Open. That event begins on September 18, with the final table action taking place on the 23rd.
