Chance Kornuth has a history of success in online poker, but had yet to win a World Series of Poker bracelet. That is, until now. Kornuth took down the $5,000 PL Omaha WSOP event to claim his first ever bracelet, in addition to a prize of $510,095.
Kornuth is best known for playing online, where he’s known as “ChancesCards” or “ChanceCU” depending on which room you find him in. He’s already racked up over $1 million in online earnings, and now has a live tournament victory to back up those results.
But Kornuth wasn’t the only Internet sensation who made it to the final table. When the tournament got down to heads up play, Kornuth still had to deal with Kevin Boudreau, another talented online player gunning for his first bracelet. In fact, things got rather tense during their respective runs, as fans of the two players scuffled in the audience, requiring sections of the viewing area to be blocked off by security.
But before the two young guns could reach heads up play, there were several strong players to be dealt with first. Robert Mizrachi was at the table, looking for his second career bracelet, while poker pro Julian Gardner was also lurking. However, Mizrachi was eliminated in 8th place, while Gardner bowedout to Kornuth in 6th, and before long the tournament had become a two-man race.
Kornuth and Boudreau entered heads up play with nearly equal chip stacks, setting the stage for what could have been an epic struggle. However, Kornuth soon grabbed a significant chip lead by winning a straight over straight confrontation. Not long after, all of Boudreau’s chips went in on the flop with an overpair against Kornuth’s gutshot and lower pair. Kornuth improved to trips and held on to win both the hand and the bracelet.
For second place, Boudreau took home $313,792.
According to Kornuth, the final table was exciting, despite the altercations in the crowd.
“It was just awesome,” he said. “The fans were great. Other than a few arguments [in the crowd], everyone at the table got along great. It was fun.”
