WSOP Event No. 48 Winner Alexandre Gomes
Event No. 48 of the World Series of Poker was a $2,000 buyin No Limit Texas Hold'em tournament that started on June 27th and finished on June 29th. There were 2,314 people entered into the tournament creating a total prize pool of $4,216,940 dollars.
The top 198 finishers would collect some prize money at the tournament. This event had the largest number of entries ever for a $2,000 dollar buyin Hold'em event. The prize pool was also the second largest this year at the World Series of Poker. The only other event with a larger prize pool was the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. World Championship.
No Limit Hold'em has grown very popular at the World Series of Poker so much so that there are now 25 no limit hold'em events on this year's schedule. This was the third $2,500 dollar buyin $2,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em event on the schedule.
This event also saw the curse broken, prior to this event 47 straight defending champions had failed to cash in their respective events. But now in this even Blair Rodman, the 2007 champion finished in 136th place thus ending the curse on defending champions.
The winner of the event is Alexandre Gomes, a 25 year old professional poker player from Curitiba, Brazil. He has become the first Brazilian national to ever win a World Series of Poker bracelet. There hadn't been a South America player ever that won a WSOP bracelet in the 39 year history of the WSOP prior to his victory.
That wasn't the only first for Alexandre Gomes, this was also his first cash at the WSOP and he also got his first WSOP gold bracelet and $770,448 dollars for his first place finish.
Following his victory, Gomes said, “I want to say something to all my fellow Brazilians,” he said. “Poker is not an easy way of life. You have to study hard. You have to be prepared. You cannot rush things. You have to take it one step at a time.”
