WSOP Main Event Underway
While this is a near 40% decrease since WSOP 2006, which saw 8,773 participants in the Main Event, WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack boasts, "This year's WSOP is the best ever."
Many analysts are speculating the decline in Main Event players since last years tournament is attributed to the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA). While this is possible, Pollack inclines to disagree, stating several factors could have been to blame, such as a simple drop-off in the poker boom experienced in recent years.
"Poker is alive and well based on the great success we've had for the entire 2007 Series," said Pollack. "Whether we have three, six, or nine thousand player in the Main Event, everyone who plays will have a wonderful and thrilling experience."
Excitement passed over the room like a stiff, cool breeze as the players entered and took their seats. The tournament began at 12:15 with minimal delays. Once the officials had read the rules, famed Las Vegas star George Wallace announced to the room, "shuffle up and deal!"
